All the forms of dance in India are broadly based on "Natya Shastra" and "Abhinaya Darpanam".
Natya Shastra: Is the oldest text drama written between 200 BC and AD by Sage Bharatmuni. The Natya Shastra is incredibly wide in its scope. It covers the "Stage Design", "music", "dance"and "make up" virtually every aspect
of stage craft.
"na thath gnanam na thath shilpam
na saa vidhya na saa kalaa
naasau yogo na thath karma
naatye asmin yanna drshyathe"
" There is no other knowledge, no other sculpture, no other learning, no other art, not even yoga or action that is not found in dance. No wise utterance, no means to acheive learning, no art or craft is complete without dance." - Natya Shastra
In Bharatnatyam the most popular styles can be called the Vazhvoor, Pandallur, Kalakshetra, Mysore and Thanjavur. Here at Mayuram we strive to follow the Vazhvoor and style of Bharatnatyam.
